I have been doing some more reading on the Authentic Learning for the 21st Century:  By Marilyn M. Lombardi

 Edited by Diana G. Oblinger

 ELI Paper 1:  2007

May 2007

Educause Learning Initaiative

It talks about learning researchers haveing authenticated down to 10 design element which provide educatiors with a check list which could be valuable to them.

It also talks about Simulation based learning (on line ) and its role play and how to help then develop communications and leadership skills they may need.

It talks about Open learning  and the troubles they may occur in the web based course.  Learners are introduced to key concepts and pratises which will help instructors become aware on students misunderstanding.

Also in the reading it looks into how IT supports Authentic Learning, i.e. software visualization, digital devices etc.

What I have learnt

Filed under: Weblog — by jacquiehayes @ 1:35 am

On reflecting back on this course and on what I have learnt has been a very rewarding journey for me.  As I already work in the environment of flexible learning at our Commun ity Learning Centres, I have found some very  interesting ideas on how to present our courses.

I have learnt how to use camstudio, camstasia, skype, screenhunter,  also how to add powerpoint to Youtube, and my own demo’s to Youtube.

I have read a lot of interesting articles both on other DFLP blogs and on Weki resources.

Please check out my different categoriesI have added on my blog

Here are some Teaching Resources I have learnt while I have been completing my DFLP course.

Below is a link that leigh has shown us on how to add a youtube into my word press.

Click on this link and it should take you to leigh’s digital resource.

Here is another useful tip on Youtube called slideshare.

Click on the link below and learn how to use powerpoint slides by posting these on youtube.

This is a great teaching tool for students who cannot get to class or have been to class and have forgotten all the content of the course.

I would definetly look at this for presenting distant learning.

My Updated Plan

Filed under: Development of Learning Plan — by jacquiehayes @ 6:11 am

Project Tiltle:   Basic Introduction to new Microsoft        Office 2007 software.

Department:     Community Learning Centre

Date:                                                       18 June 2007

Project Leader:                                  Jacquie Hayes

EDC Proect Manager:                      Leigh Blackall

Project Goals:

To introduce staff and students of Otago Polytechnic, new features of Microsoft Office 2007.  This will be for both personal and in the workplace, also to update version software for unit standards. To develop online materials and resources in collaberation with colleagues in other departments at Otago Polytechnic and T.A.N.Z. (Teriary Accord of NZ) partners.

Background Project:

There is a need for this type of course as there are potential students coming into Community Learning Centre Venues, on a daily basis asking if there are courses on Microsoft Office 2007.  These students are mostly not already enroled in existing courses or are people who have brought new computers and have office 2007 all ready installed.  These students do not know how to navigate these new features.  Also staff at Otago Polytechnic will be required to know these new features as well, when microsoft office 2007 is updated on their workstation computers, so being prepared and giving them the knowledge of these new features cuts down a lot of confussion when it is installed.  Another reason is all resources will need to be re-written in the Business Administration computing unit standards so this will help all staff who are developing projects who use office 2007.

Project Scope:

Jacquie Hayes would be involved in setting up this course in collaboration with others e.g. David Bremer (ITE), Leigh Balckall adn Bronwyn Hegarty (EDC). TANZ colleagues will be approached as part of this project.

Outline of Course.

There is a variety of ways that this resourse could be developed.  Here are a few examples:

A)  By hand out with instructions.

B)  Video and Audio instructions,

C)  By CD or DVD

D)  By Blackboard or Wiki resourses.

A laboratory/workshop method, which is hands on will  be used so participants can learn and practice new skills on the computer.  This utilises, visual and kinaesthetic styles of learning.  The use of audio and also PDF files will be used for participants who do not like learning off a screen, because they have the choice of listening to instructions and printing them off, so they can read them.  This learning method is suitable for reflective learners.  This content will relate to the learning objectives of the course.

The content will  be presented in small incremental steps, so it is logical to read. On the Audio, instructions will need to be clear and not spoken too fast and so they are understandable.  Links to other websites will be provided i.e. Youtube or wiki resources  and also maybe using powerpoint slides on slideshare, and they will need to be linked correctly, as this is fustrating to the learner if the link is non-operational, or does not take you to the correct web page.

Length of the programe.

This programe will be delivered on a part time basis with students electing to complete the requirements which would lead into the National Certificate in Level 2 computing.  This is a self directed course.

Entry Criteria.

Mininum academic entry criteria would be:

Open to all students who have basic knowledge of computing.  All student will be allocated space in this course as resourses are available, and enrol and book times which suits them and at the Community Learning Centre Venues, and will undertake the self -paced learning material provided, in the open hours of Otago Polytechnic.

Considerations for learners:

Learning Styles:

Part time Delivery at our learning centres, and as this is self paced. it will be step-by-step guides to learning, for each indivual student, and tuitorial staff will be available to assist on a one-on-one basis, and the amount of time wil vary according to skill level of the indivual student.  Different elements would be shaped, i.e. Word, Excel, Access Microsoft 2007.

Distant Delivery could be made available to help with busy demands of people who have busy work shedules and not able to get into our centres to learn, or who wish to learn at their workstations, at their workplace.  This could be accessed by Blackboard, Wekipedia, CD or DVD.

Learning outcomes

  • To recognise a base core of computing skills required in any industry that requires such skills.
  • To provide a first qualification in computing for learners studying any field or domain.
  • recognise an entry level for further education in computing.

An introduction with each participant at the beginning of the course will be necessary to establish the baseline skill level.  All students will  need to complete a Performance Criteria before they are able to sit an assessment.  To do this, we will need to sit with the student and go through the questions with them on the Performance Criteria so they know what is expected of them and that they understand the unit they are completing.  They will then need to sign this, as proof that this their own work. Also additional excerise sheets with quizzes, question and answers should be given to them to work through as well, as they learn this new skill. Summative assessement activities will be used when it is considered that an student is ready to be assessed.  Some assessments could be assessed on line, with the student identifying when they are ready to undertake their assessement.

Student Feedback.

Students can give us feed back by way of an evaluation form given to them after sitting their assessment, this would be sent to the Manager of Community Learning Centre.  Students will get feed back on their assessment results within five working days of the date of assessment.

The number of re-sits would be three.

Students may wish to have their assessment in Te Reo Maori, this may be undertaken if enough time limit is allowed on a written request to Programe manager is made.

Assessments will be based on a range of strategies including:

  • Observation of practical skills
  • Practical assesment tasks
  • Simulations
  • On-line interactive assessments
  • Oral Presentation

Resourses:

A tutor manual may need to be written, and made available so the tutor can help the student and prompt them in the right direction of the course. As there is not a lot of resourse as yet published on Microsoft office 2007, we will use Cheryl Price books when they come available.

Camstudio will be used for the video and audio and screen captures and the production of screen shots for handouts made by using screen hunter, also developing quizzes, questions and answers.  I will also use web resources such as those on Wikipedia microsoft office 2007 to show examples as well. (This save the problem of copyright)  The CLC computers would need to be upgraded to 1GB and virtual office 2007 installed.  This is one way of getting around the problem with running other office versions i.e. 2002/2003 at the same time.

Considerations:

Students must have access to the course content and be able to have access to resources and equipment i.e. (broadband or dial-up),  books and worksheets, CD player, DVD player.

Each student has a different learning style i.e. visual, active, reflective, so it is important to make available all resourse to accomodate this.  It is important for the student to know exactly the units they are working towards, and the achievements they want from this course, and that it is at their skill level.

Reference to different styles can be accessed at this link

This will need to be a collaborative project as the Certificate in Business Administration has courses on Microsoft Word, and there will need to be discussions with Dave Bremer (ITE) and the Information System and Services (ISS) departments which provide software for the organisation and staff computing training.

Time / CostsThe time and cost of this project would have to be calculated at a later time if the project was accepted

My New Plan

Filed under: Development of Learning Plan, Weblog — by jacquiehayes @ 7:04 am

Project Title and Department: Microsoft Office 2007

Project Leader:   Jacquie Hayes

EDC Project Leader:  Leigh Blackall

Project Goals To introduce students to Microsoft Office 2007

I feel there is a need for this as we have students coming into our venue’s daily to asking us if we can teach them micosoft office 2007.  These students are mostly new ones or are people who have just brought a new computer with 2007 on it and dont know how to navigate the new features.  As we only have 2002 on our computers we find this difficult to be able to help them, thus they are going else where to learn or losing interest in their computer.

Background Project:

I think I will use  laboratory/workshop method that is when a studentis hand on and can learn a practice new skills on the computer.  This is a visual style and i thought that I would use audio and  also a PDF file for students who dont like learning off  a screan so they can print this off and can read off it. (Reflective learners).  This content will relate to the learning objectives of the course.

The content will be in small incremental steps and logicale to read and understand, on the audio this will need to be clear and not too fast, not garbled, and understandable.

The links to other web sites i.e. youtube or weki need to be linked correctly.

Students learning outcome will need to be written, letting the student know what is expected of them at the completion of there course. And a induction with student should be necessary for find the students skill level.

Resourses

A tutor manual would needed to be written, and made available so they can help the student and prompt them in the right direction of the course.

I will use camtasia to do the video and audio and screan hunter to do the screen shots for PDF and handouts, also for the quizzes.

I will also use web connections like wekipedia microsoft office 2007  to show examples as well.

There is not alot of resourse information available for micorsoft office 2007, but I have linked to a web site on books available in September this year.

Considerations

To look at  if we can put this on line it would be a huge project and I would need to approach Business Admin to see if they have courses as well, and maybe talking with Dave Bremer and the IT department.

Other considerations would be how our computers would run micorsoft office 2007 along side other office versions i.e. 2002/2003, and how many would be available to each suite and to the number of  students.

The Outline

Would be working with David  Bremer, and the IT dept including  quizzes and excercise sheets, with questions and anwers and maybe a small assessment at the end.

Project Scope:

Jacquie would be invloved in stting up this course with David Bremer/Leigh/Bronwyn

David Bremer may oversee this project.

Time / Costs

The time and cost of this project would have to be calculated at a later time if the project was accepted.

Catch Up

Filed under: Development of Learning Plan, Weblog — by jacquiehayes @ 9:22 am

I have just been thinking about our face to face meeting with the Team of DFLP Tutors and reflecting back on that afternoon.

It was great to catch up with the Team from Central and throw some ideas around and catch up with how they are  getting on with their course.

We discussed different learning styles and we watched a audio demo that Terry had put together, which I found real interesting on the different technologies available, I have a real passion to learn this technology and put it into practice, so I can share the knowledge with my students. I got some great ideas and how we can put a lot of our courses on screan/video and so students can learn visually and audioably, there were some good ideas on easy simple steps i.e. powerpoint display and using window’s movie maker and using external links to other webpages to save the problem with copyright.

Great ideas on adding quizzes and tasks and also putting files as aPDF for students who dont want to read off the computer.

I haved planed that i will use these techniques in my plan for my course as this will help most students with different learning styles.

I enjoyed Bronwyn’s talk about Blackboard, but i wonder how long Blackboard will last? With technology growing so fast and new technology taking its place, it brings to mind to me like we had just got videos in and then it was DVD’s now its Ipods (goodness I am showing my age! and sounding like my MOTHER!!) so with Wekipedia the new technology, my mind boggles on how and what equipment is going to be the best for the future.

It feels like a technology race, but my thinking is which ever one is used, the main thoughts are that my students are understanding what they are learning, enjoying what they are learning, and being confident of what they have learnt to put it into practice somewhere, sometime in their life time, and maybe share with others what they have learnt.

I think I have missed my proffession, I should have been a preacher!! :)
